Blake used the same doors he’d watched Christine pass through and turned to walk along the terrace. He didn’t see any sign of her, but his note said she’d be waiting in the library. He laughed as he followed the terrace where it wrapped around the building. He didn’t really want to think too hard about why he was eager to be alone with Christine. He knew why Melinda was giving them time together, but what she wanted wasn’t possible. There was no future for Christine with him. He had a family history to prove just how impossible such a relationship was. Rangers didn’t make good husbands. Their jobs were too demanding, too unpredictable, too dangerous. A wife wanted someone steady, reliable, someone who came home regularly. His own mother had walked out on his father for that reason. Dylan’s engagement had broken up under the pressure. That future was not for him. He was here to protect Christine, not romance her.

And yet...

It was a beautiful night, a lovely party, and they needed some downtime. Surely there was no harm in enjoying her company tonight. Except if he was truthful, he’d admit he’d been enjoying her company far too much.

Blake reached the end of the terrace. There had been no door, no entrance to a library. A vague foreboding tingled in his bones. Where was Christine? He’d watched her walk through that doorway, but there was no sign of her. He walked to the edge of the terrace and looked out over the garden that was thick with trees and shrubs. Flowering plants crowded narrow paths, and the air lay heavy. Fear seized him at the realization that Christine was somewhere out there, probably looking for him on the same wild-goose chase that had brought him to this dead end. Except hers was probably leading her straight into deadly danger.

This was why he couldn’t have a relationship. He’d been so busy thinking of romancing Christine that he hadn’t realized they’d both walked smack into a trap—again.

Where was she?

Blake raced back along the terrace to the last staircase he remembered seeing. He stood at the top and peered into the darkness. Christine hated darkness. He’d learned that during their time at the safe house. Now she’d been lured into it with the promise of meeting him.

He took the steps in three jumps and headed down the path.

“Christine,” he called in a loud whisper. He didn’t want to draw attention, but his hopes of quickly finding her in the garden were dying with each step. There were so many turnoffs, so many paths she could have taken.

Lord, help me find her. Blake didn’t remember when he’d last prayed. Probably not since his mother left and his prayers for her return went unanswered. But he would fall to his knees now if it would do any good.

Please, Lord. If not for me, help me find Christine for her sake. She doesn’t deserve this. She trusts You. Please show me the way to where she is.
